WELLINGTON Cricket Club's groundsman Des Campbell has described the conditions for preparing the wicket for this season as 'massive.'

"We've had two big problems," said Des this week. "We've had so much rain it's often been impossible to work on the ground.

"The other problem is the outfield - the county council work on it less and less each year.

"Thankfully, the local council are going to take over ground maintenance next year - and at least they will be accessable. Hopefully, they will have the budget to look after it better."

Despite these problems, Des says the club's seconds will be able to play on it on Saturday, May 4. He said: "We will get something on."

Wellington 2nd XI play against Taunton Deane Cavaliers on Saturday, while the first team begin life in the Bristol/Somerset division of the West of England Premier Cricket League away to Taunton Deane following promotion.

Des added: "We had the best team ever last season. They never lost a game in winning the championship.

"But this is a whole new ball game. They will be playing some top quality club sides."

Wellington will be at home to Midsomer Norton on Saturday week (12.00).
