OF THE 21 bowlers who entered the Open Singles Competition at Wellington Bowling Club, six have now made it through to the quarter finals. There are still two matches to be played, meaning all eight can battle it out for semi-final places.
There have been some very exciting games in the first and second rounds, particularly between Alan May and Pete Nichols. Alan led 10 – 5 and was looking good. But Pete picked up the pace and by the 18th end they were level on 15 shots each.
The last four ends were very tight but Pete Nichols came through best to win it by two shots 19 – 17.
One other second round match was also played this week between Diana Dagg and Steve Horrill. This was also very close early on. After ten ends they were level on 9 each but Steve moved on at pace in the second half to take it 21 – 10.
So the quarter finalists are Arthur Carter, Nick Channon, Steve Bradnum, Pete Nichols, Ian Hollingsworth and Steve Horrill.
There are two second round games still to be played and they are booked for this weekend. The first is between Rob Higgs and Mike Connor and the second between Phil Ellis and Darren Sparks.
