SHANE Burger, the Somerset CCC batting & assistant coach who joined the Cidermen ahead of the start of the 2023 season, has signed an extension to his contract which will see him remain at the club until at least the end of the 2026 campaign.
Shane was previously the head coach of Scotland, a post he had held since 2019, but the 42 year old South African enjoyed a successful playing career himself before becoming involved with the coaching scene.
All rounder Shane played for Kwa Zulu-Natal Inland between 2001-2 and 2015 during which time he appeared in 91 first class matches scoring a total of almost 4000 runs at an average of 33.67 and a best of 153 not out, and took 171 wickets at 24.47, his best return being five for 13.
In List A cricket the all rounder played in 79 matches, in which he scored 1332 runs at an average of 37.00 and claimed 68 wickets at 26.47, while in T20 Shane appeared in 36 games scored over 400 runs at 38.36 and took 23 wickets at 26.04.
After extending his contract Shane said: “First and foremost, I am really excited to have been given the opportunity to extend my contract. I’d like to thank the club for having faith and investing in me.
“I really enjoy being with this group and there’s a tremendous amount of depth within the squad. There is a constant stream of batting talent being transitioned through the Pathway and into the Second XI, and part of my job is to make sure this group as well as the current playing group are well equipped to perform and handle the pressures of the professional game.
“It is also integral we produce players that can play for England. The club is in a healthy place moving forward and we have made positive strides within the past two seasons. We look forward to continuing this work into the future.
“The club has a rich history of producing results and producing really good young players. My drive and my passion is to ensure that continues.”
Somerset Director of Cricket Andy Hurry is pleased the club have retained Shane’s services. “Shane has worked really effectively over the last few seasons to build really impactful relationships with both players and staff,” he said. “He has also grown his insight and awareness of the talent coming through the Pathway.
“He has worked tirelessly to nurture and develop the ability of our players, allowing them to move closer to reaching their full potential and we are delighted that he has extended his time with the club and will be continuing to support and develop the players’ growth over the forthcoming years.”
