WELLINGTON Swimming Club is coming home to the town's revamped sports centre when its pool reopens in September.

The pool at Wellington Sports Centre is due to reopen on September 2, as a £3.6 million refurbishment of the Corams Lane facilities concludes.

Wellington Swimming Club has been using Wellington School's pool while the work has been carried out. The club will return to the sports centre from September 3 with an enhanced training programme on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday evenings.

Club chairman Andrew Enever said: "We're excited to be coming home to Wellington Sports Centre. The timing is perfect as we have plans to expand what we offer to members. It gives us a perfect opportunity to welcome more people into the club.

"Wellington Swimming Club is well known for being friendly and fun and we can't wait to offer a warm welcome back to the sports centre pool to members old and new. Anyone interested in joining the club can contact us through Facebook or our website to arrange a free trial session.

"We're very grateful to Wellington School for hosting us while we've been unable to use Wellington Sports Centre, and to our members for their patience during our temporary relocation.”

From September, the club's training and development programme will be boosted with regular club time trials and weekly skills sessions.

Club time trials will allow members to assess their abilities against the clock and create goals for their training. The club intends to make these a regular part of the programme. The club's ASA qualified coaches will introduce extra skills sessions for all members on Friday evenings.

This will give swimmers of all levels an extra 30 minutes of pool time each week to focus on aspects of competitive swimming. In the first few weeks they will cover turns and dives, timed distance swimming and speed work.

Wellington Swimming Club will take part in the Somerset ASA County Development Meet at Millfield School on October 5 and 6, allowing members to record officially-recognised times.

The club's return to Wellington Sports Centre will allow non-members to swim at the same time as members on Tuesday and Sunday evenings. During these sessions, part of the pool will be open for public lane swimming while members are being coached - a welcome opportunity for parents of members to get some pool time as their children train.

The ten-month refurbishment and decarbonisation project at Wellington Sports Centre includes installing a new roof and solar panels, a new air source heat pump heating system and upgraded ventilation, windows and doors - helping to reduce carbon emissions. A new 60-station gym has been created and is already open.

Wellington Swimming Club caters for swimmers of all ages and abilities within a progressive coaching programme through a squad structure.
