THE future of a new Wellington Railway Station was under threat this week after Chancellor Rachel Reeves axed the programme through which it would have been funded.

Work on the £15 million station close to the Longforth Farm housing estate was expected to start this autumn, with the first trains due to arrive in June, 2026.

But the Labour Government which won power in the July 4 General Election has now said it has to fill an unexpected £20 billion budget black hole and will cut spending plans to do so.

Ms Reeves announced on Monday afternoon (July 29) that one of the programmes being dropped was the Restoring Your Railways scheme.

She said individual projects within the programme, such as the one for Wellington, would now be reviewed.
