IT looks as if Wellington Town Council is going to be able to fly the flag at long last – that’s official!
A request has been made on several occasions in recent years that the council should install a flagpole at its offices in Fore Street and, as a consequence, there have also been grumbles that the authority has been unable to fly the Union Flag on ceremonial occasions.
But it looks as if those requests and grumbles are going to finally result in positive action.
Members of the council’s community committee met on February 17 where they agreed to commission Croft Surveyors to develop detailed proposals and submit a planning application for improvements to the authority’s office building at 28-30 Fore Street.
These plans include external signage and – drum roll please – a flag pole!
It has been nearly ten years since the council was last able to fly the flag at its offices in the former Squirrel House building.
There used to be three flag pole brackets on the building, but these were removed when the old Taunton Dean Borough Council redecorated the building in late 2015.
But to have a flag pole bracket re-installed on the building would require planning permission as the building is listed – and that has just never been sought since, until now that is.
Other works include replacing the current Community Office sign to read Wellington Town Council.
And there are also plans for a change to the colour scheme to the main entrance doors from an olive green to red.
The building is also home to Wellington Museum and councillors heard that damp plaster under one of the bay windows will also be removed, repainted and replaced.
The Mayor Cllr Janet Lloyd said: “I’m quite happy about all of this.”
Councillors supported the plans.
