WELLINGTON Town Council is to look at presenting special coins to children in commemoration of next year’s Coronation of King Charles III.
Commemorative coins were produced for the Platinum Jubilee earlier this year in honour of the Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne and members of the council’s town centre committee have agreed that the initiative should be done again for the Coronation.
Councillors were told that a total of 3,150 coins could be produced for local school children.
The Mayor, Cllr Mark Lithgow, said: “I think we should do this.”
But Cllr Keith Wheatley felt that doing a commemorative coin so soon after the Platinum Jubilee would lose its significance.
“We did the coins for a significant event - 70 years on the throne was quite stupendous and nobody will see that achievement happen again,” he told the council’s town centre committee on November 15. “But if we do the coins again for the Coronation I think it’s going to lose its impact.”
Cllr Marcus Barr disagreed and said: “I think we should do the coins. It’s going to be the first time for many of us that we’ve seen a king’s head on a coin.”
Councillors agreed to support the idea, but more details and costs were needed. The committee also agreed to replace wall-mounted flagpole holders in Fore Street, South Street and High Street to put up the Coronation flags on May 6, 2023.
