A PARISH council is calling for local support and says it ‘cannot stand alone’ in the face of a looming 250-home development on the edge of Wellington.
Wellington Without Parish Council gathered to discuss the impending Oldway Road development on Monday, March 10.
Around 30 members of the public attended the meeting where it was agreed the proposed development should be objected to.
The parish council also voiced plans to meet with Wellington Town Council in the coming weeks to join forces in objecting to the plans.
Wellington Without Parish Council stated: “There are many reasons why this ought to be opposed, and, although the parish council has little power working alone, a strategic link will be formed between Wellington without and the town council with an imminent meeting before March 21 as the impact of the development will be felt across the whole area.
“The parish council is small and cannot stand alone.”
The proposal, produced by Wellington LVA, a West Country based land investor and planning project management company, outlined plans to build 250 new homes on land south of the Oldway Road.
The group’s current goal is to form a probable planning application by Spring of this year, subject to feedback.
People who attended the meeting said they believed the town had covered its fair share of necessary home building.
However, councillors fear revised Government targets to build housing will have an effect on the approval of local development.
Due to the assumption that the national planning framework will encourage the building of new homes, the council said it believes there may be limits as to what Somerset Council can do for their cause.
Wellington Mayor Cllr Janet Lloyd highlighted the importance of moving forwards together and encouraged the urgent meeting of the two councils.
