The local Liberal Democrats are undergoing a 'name change' to reflect Wellington's new parliamentary constituency.
Formerly known as the Taunton Deane Liberal Democrats, they will now be called the Taunton and Wellington Liberal Democrats - mirroring a change in the ward boundaries ahead of them being contested for the first time at the next general election.
The decision was approved at the local party's annual general meeting, which also saw former Taunton mayor, Gill Slattery, appointed as the group's president.
The occasion was followed by a fund-raising dinner which attracted more than 100 supporters. Attendees included the MP for Tiverton and Honiton, Richard Foord, Taunton and Wellington parliamentary candidate Gideon Amos and Sir Vince Cable, who led the party from 2017 to 2019.
Commenting, Richard Foord said: "I live in Uffculme and so I am often in Wellington.
“I have seen how hard Gideon is working with the team of Wellington town councillors to fight for a new banking hub and post office for the town, to stand up for residents at Ivy House and the Old Vicarage and to secure direct London trains when the new station opens.
“Seeing over 100 members backing Gideon at the formation of the new Taunton and Wellington Liberal Democrats this week was inspiring and shows the priority he is already giving to the town.”
