RESIDENTS in Parklands Road were shocked to wake up last week to find a ‘sinkhole’ in the middle of their road.

The almost metre-deep crater emerged after the road’s surface gave way and collapsed, leaving a potentially hazardous void in middle of the street.

On Monday, June 3, the site was cordoned off with cones and barriers, and had been marked for repair by Somerset Council - which said it would complete the job by “midweek.”

The council has also launched an investigation into the cause of the sinkhole, which they hope to establish quickly.

The hazard has been forcing drivers to swerve to avoid it for a number of days, with the site taking up about a lane of traffic.

The sinkhole appears to be almost a metre in depth, and around two feet wide.

One local resident expressed their concern that children could potentially climb over the barriers and injure themselves in the sinkhole.
