AROUND 260 people have taken part in a consultation about the Green Corridor land project which is being coordinated by Wellington Town Council.
The Somerset West and Taunton Council bought the 64 acres of land – known as the Green Corridor and covers an area stretching from Tonedale to Hilly Head and includes The Basins nature reserve – in July last year and has recently signed it over to the town council on a 150-year lease.
A vision and management plan for the project was agreed by the town council in April 2022 and covers a number of key ingredients.
These include making the land available for public use and to be used to promote recreation, healthy lifestyles, local food growing and the development of arts and cultural spaces; working with the
Wellington Community Food Group to establish a community farm on the land; extending the existing Basins Allotments site to create more space to encourage greater self-sufficiency in food production; and looking at developing extra playing pitch capacity with the Wellington Sports Federation.
A consultation has recently been carried out to gauge the view of the local community and results will be discussed at Wellington Town Council’s environment and open spaces committee later this month.
The Pop-Up Shop in the town centre was used as a hub for the consultation and Cllr Catherine Govier said she was encouraged by the level of interest.
Cllr Govier, speaking at the town council’s full monthly meeting on Monday (March 6), said: “It was glad to see so many members of the public engaging with the project.”
