A NEW rule has been brought in as part of the tenancy agreement for allotment-holders at The Basins in Wellington – green-fingered enthusiasts have been banned from taking guns onto the site.

It would have been somewhat expected that common sense might have dictated on that, but it has actually had to be written down in black and white.

The proposed rule came from Wellington Town Council’s Basins Allotments advisory board meeting of November 11 which was chaired by Cllr Janet Lloyd, the Mayor of Wellington.

It was recommended to the council’s environment committee on November 20 to approve the new rule and adopt the new tenancy agreement which states: “Tenants are not permitted to carry or use a firearm including an airgun at any time on site.”

Cllr Lloyd said: “Somebody was down there at the allotments with an airgun shooting rats.”

Councillors unanimously agreed to support the recommendation to ban guns from the allotments.
