A NEAR-£1 million refurbishment of Wellington’s public library is due to start in the New Year and will see the service temporarily closed and re-located to the former over-60s club in North Street.
The Fore Street library will close in November and everything will be packed up and moved to the new, smaller building ready to re-start before Christmas.
Somerset County Council, which owns both buildings, said the temporary library would offer a reduced level of service but the aim was to maintain core services, including a couple People’s Network computers, and a printer and photocopier.
Opening hours would be the same as the town centre library currently worked.
The refurbishment work will start in February and take about 10 months to complete.
The work will allow use of the existing library’s upper floors, which currently are in disrepair and provide rooms to rent to other organisations such as Citizen’s Advice, the NHS, and the county’s registrar service.
It will also incorporate an accessible entrance and toilet and a baby changing facility.
The proposed design of the new library will go on public display next spring to allow users and other local people to comment.
