A SECOND attempt will be made next week to allow Wellington residents to meet the officials whose job it is to help them survive flooding events.
People can drop into Wellington Football Club between 4 pm and 7 pm on Wednesday, November 22, after the original event planned for November 1 was cancelled because of storms predicted to cause local flooding.
The event will provide an opportunity for residents to share their experiences and any lessons learned from catastrophic flooding which hit the area in September and to influence the responses to any future weather events.
The town experienced its heaviest rainfall in a single day on Sunday, September 17, than on any other occasion since July, 1969.
Somerset Council has been working with Wellington Town Council to help the community recover from September’s flooding and is holding next week’s event to bring residents together with staff from Somerset highways, planning, and housing teams, and officials from the Environment Agency, Somerset Rivers Authority, and Somerset Civil Contingencies Team.
Staff and councillors from the town council will also be attending to discuss flood risk and preventative measures.
Town clerk Dave Farrow said: “This event is about ensuring that the right support is in place for the residents and community both now and into the future and help inform our planning for dealing with future severe weather events.
“The event is an opportunity for people’s experiences to be heard, to capture lessons learned, and understand any unmet needs.
“There can also be a general conversation about flood risk and mitigation.”
Separately, town councillors are shortly due to meet residents of a number of properties in Rockwell Green which were flooded in September to discuss if measures could be taken to prevent any repetition.
