TWO motorists are facing police prosecutions after they drove across a footpath and the front gardens of several Wellington pensioners’ homes.

The two incidents happened between 8.15 am and 8.30 am on Saturday (April 5) and both were captured on a neighbour’s Ring video doorbell.

The motorists drove from George Street along a wide pedestrian footway connecting it through a retirement bungalows estate to Bovet Street, but were forced by street furniture to drive across at least six gardens.

The bungalows, owned by Somerset Council, provide sheltered accommodation for elderly and vulnerable tenants.

One Bovet Street resident told the Wellington Weekly: “I happened to look down that way and I could not believe it.

“A brown car came out along the path from the side of the end bungalow and drove down into the road at the end and away.

“I thought maybe the dustbin lorry was blocking George Street and that is why they did it, but when I walked round that way to move my car there was nothing in the road.

“So, I do not know what possessed them to do it.”

The incident was reported to Wellington’s neighbourhood policing team and the door cam footage was handed over.

A police spokesperson said the team was keen to hear from anybody who could help identify the two drivers.

Neighbourhood Sgt Jon O’Connor said: “There is no excuse for this selfish behaviour which shows a complete disregard for pedestrian safety and residents’ property.

“We are grateful to the member of the public who contacted one of the team about the issue.

“These drivers have committed traffic offences, and we will make inquiries to identify them.

“I would ask anybody with information, dashcam or other footage which could help to call 101 and ask for the Wellington neighbourhood team.”
