WELLINGTON have been drawn at home to Western Counties North side Gordano in the semi-finals of the Somerset Cup on Saturday, April 16.
Gordano are enjoying a good season and are currently lying third in their division, having not lost since January when they slumped 64-3 away to 100 per cent title favourites Matson.
Wellington coach Allyn Chetland admitted: “We don’t know much about them, only that they are going well. We have a good opportunity to reach the final but this will be a tough game.
“We thought that the semi-finals would be played on neutral grounds but we now know this is not the case.”
Wellington gained a place in the last-four after beating Bridgwater & Albion 25-19 at home in a mid-week tie which was played in rain earlier this month, the result being in doubt right to the end.
“Provided the weather is better, we are expecting a good-size crowd for the Gordano game,” added Chetland. “Cup rugby is a lot different to league rugby.”
Meanwhile, Wellington continue their enforced break and do not play again until Saturday, March 26, when they play fourth-placed Lydney at the Athletic Ground. The Forest of Dean outfit beat Wellington 48-19 when the sides met at the end of November.
Wellington 2nd XV, who won away to Midsomer Norton last Saturday in Somerset One, beating them 45-0 away in Somerset One, are home to Keynsham 2nd XV tomorrow.
Wiveliscombe, who put up a spirited fight before losing 17-5 away to second-placed Truro in Western Counties West last weekend, are away again tomorrow - to Penryn. Wiveliscombe are lying tenth in the table, while Penryn are one place above them, and have five more points. Wiveliscombe, however, have a game in hand.
Wiveliscombe 2nd XV, who won 47-7 away to Wyvern last weekend to complete the season’s double over their Taunton rivals in Somerset Two South, have a blank day tomorrow.
