TWO long-serving Wiveliscombe firefighters have stepped down, one to pursue a different career with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue (DSFR) and the other to be able to focus on his family.
Farewell presentations to the duo were made at the Wiveliscombe brigade’s weekly drill night.
Crew manager Neil Higgins had given 24 years of service to the town, while firefighter Steve Barker had served for nearly a decade.
Mr Higgins’s colleagues said it marked the end of an era for the Wiveliscombe station.
A DSFR spokesperson said: “The atmosphere was one with a mixture of gratitude, respect, laughter, and a touch of sadness as we gathered to say goodbye to Neil.
“Neil’s journey with us began at the age of 18 and over the course of 12 years as a firefighter, he exemplified the true spirit of service.
“Through dedication and hard work, Neil rose through the ranks to earn his well-deserved promotion as a crew manager.
“His journey is not merely a timeline of years served but a testament to his relentless pursuit of high standards and his commitment to the safety and well-being of our community.
“The sacrifices he and his family made over the years underscore his profound dedication to his role and our community.
“Late nights, missed family gatherings, and the unpredictable call of duty, Neil faced it all with professionalism and enduring passion for the job, service, and the station.
“We give an equal amount, if not more, of thanks to Lisa, Niamh, and Maxwell, because without their continued support and tolerance, we may not have had Neil, or, at least, not for as long as we did.”
Mr Higgins said: “It has been a pleasure to have served at Wiveliscombe over the years, some great memories and lifelong friendships made.
“Of course, I could not have given so many years if not for the support of my wife, children, and wider family support groups, they have borne the brunt while I was out enjoying myself, working.
“Also, a massive thanks to all those who have supported me and had confidence in me to achieve and do a good job from a professional point of view, too many to mention.”
Tributes were also paid to Mr Barker, a ‘true exemplar of kindness’ whose ‘kind-hearted spirit has been the cornerstone of our station’s cohesion and compassion’.
The spokesperson said: “A silent force, he supplied a calmness to our daily operations, creating an atmosphere that reflects not just professionalism but genuine care for one another.
“Steve’s departure is not just a loss for our station and community, it is a shift in the dynamics of our firefighting family at Wiveliscombe.
“We extend our gratitude and bid our farewells with a mix of sadness and appreciation.
“Working alongside such a caring crew member has been a privilege.
“Again, we thank Steve’s wife Rebecca for supporting and tolerating Steve’s commitments to service.
“The commitment this job requires is given by family members just as much as the firefighter.”
