AFTER two pre-season games, Wiveliscombe Colts took to the field for their first Sunday afternoon game against Clevedon Colts - and it turned out to be a tightly fought game with the visitors gaining an exciting 20-15 success.
With a full squad of 25 players, 23 ran out in the new playing shirts from NKteamwear, kindly sponsored by Wiveliscombe Joinery, SJS Southwest, GC Stanbury & Sons, Brendon Power Washers and Thornes Tipper Ltd.
The Colts are hugely grateful to these sponsors for helping to get this team back on the field.
Some great play started off the first half with both teams showing off their skills and players, With Clevedon pushing for the try line, a mistake by Wivey gave them a kick at goal and the lead.
T Knell then took full advantage of the restart, kicking the ball down the field, and using his boot to guide the ball over the line and scoring the try. A few penetlies from Clevedon then gave Wivey a set play on the 5 meter line, with B Thorne using the pack to move over the try line for the score. O Stanbury missed the conversions. The half time score was 10-3 to the home team.
The second half saw both teams using their sqaud players, with Clevedon moving the ball towards theirtry line, J Lee turned over the ball and kicking it up field with some excellent boot skills stoping the ball going into touch, O Stanbury chased and collected the ball to run in the try.
With Wivey now 15-3 up Clevedon dug deep and kept pushing for their try line, falling short on a couple of occasions and some lovely defence from Wivey. A charge down on a clearance saw Clevedon gain possession, finding the try line, making it 15-10.
A second try from Clevedon soon followed with their winger finding too much space.
.A tense last 10 minutes saw Clevedon’s winger picking up a second try, giving them the lead 15-20, Wivey didn’t give up and full back A Irvine found space, some great defence from Clevedon denied A Irvine the try. A push for the line was now against the clock and a knock on ended the game. Final Score 15-20 to Clevedon Colts.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped get the squad back on the field after several years without Colts in Wiveliscombe, the players for turning up and giving their all and to Clevedon for travelling, in tour like style and joining us for this game. A special mention must go to Rachel Holloway who fed both our Colts players, Clevedon Supports and the 3 ladies’ teams too.
