WELLINGTON’S hopes of starting the rugby season with back to back victories were dashed when they crashed 51-15 away to Newton Abbot in Regional Two South West.
Having beaten Cullompton at home on the opening day, Wellington would have been confident of putting up a good display at Newton Abbot.
However, they conceded a converted try inside five minutes and never seriously recovered.
They were quickly ten points down and then lost Will Hodgson to a yellow card.
The home side built up a 22-0 lead in the first half before Liam Phillips snapped up Wellington’s opening try which was converted by Alex Davey.
Trailing 22-7 at the interval, Wellington fell further behind as the Devon side continued to dominate.
The visitors were 32-7 down before Davey kicked a penalty and Newton Abbot continued to pile on the agony, scoring another two tries before Corey Jenkinson went over for Wellington’s second try with the score now 44-15.
Newton Abbot still had one more try in them as they finished 51-15 winners, having never looked in any trouble right from the beginning.
Wellington will be looking for a much improved display when they play at home to Wadebridge Camels in their next league match on Saturday, September 21.
