WELLINGTON failed to end their lean spell when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Barnstaple Town in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western League.

The only goal of the match was scored after only seven minutes when the home side were caught out by a ball over the top and Tommy Rogers ran on to it to produce a clinical finish.

After this early setback, Wellington played some good football against the division’s fifth-placed side with Sully McKenna having a shot blocked and Josh Lukin shooting wide from distance.

And just before half time Wellington went close to scoring when Miles Quick tried to chip the ‘keeper - but his effort was off target.

Trailing 1-0 at half time, Wellington brought on Glen Wright and James De Selincourt to replace Mark Cornish and McKenna following a first half in which they had given a good account of themselves.

Wellington were awarded a penalty on 75 minutes for a foul on Jake Quick but the spot-kick by his brother Miles was saved by the Barnstaple ‘keeper who then denied Jack Winsor.

It proved costly because despite a spirited display Wellington found themselves still in search of their first victory since beating Ilfracombe Town in mid-November.

Meanwhile, Wellington are home again on Saturday, January 25, when they play Nailsea and Tickenham in another league match (3p.m.).

Wellington Reserves are away to Colyton in the Premier Division of the Devon & Exeter League, while Wellington are without a game in the Taunton & District Saturday League. Wellington A have no match.

Wellington Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, play away to second-placed Dunwear United in the first division of the Saturday League.

On Sunday, Wellington side Moortown are home to Butlins Butlins in Division One of the Somerset Sunday League (10.45a.m.).
