WELLINGTON Khaki Sox travelled to Plymouth on July 21 to play the Mariners in a double-header day of baseball.
Several rookies from both teams played in new positions in the first game, challenging themselves and gaining invaluable experience.
Jamie Cox started as pitcher and Wellington were able to secure three quick ‘outs’ in the first innings to start the day in a strong position. The Mariners weren’t flustered and some great pitching by Mac Macdonald returned the same result on Khaki Sox, 0-0.
The following innings became one-sided with Mariners securing runs and then in the fourth, Jamie relinquished pitching duties to Alex Roberts due to injury.
In that first game, the highlight was Bryn Jones finding a gap in the infield and providing Mat Smart the chance to run home for the Sox’s only score of the game, in an 18-1 loss.
Wellington weren’t deterred by this defeat and they were able to rally against a 7-run deficit to win the second game.
Every member of the Sox squad played their part with excellent and great base running being backed up by the solid defensive work.
Next up for Wellington is a trip to Yeovil Whirlwinds on August 4 for another double-header.
