Wellington hosted Winscombe in front of a large crowd at the Athletic Ground on Saturday afternoon, but at the the end the game despite a brave fightback it was the North Somerset side who ran out the winners.
This was Wellington’s first home defeat of the season and sees them slip to ninth place in the South West Two table with 10 points from their opening five matches, two of which they have won.
From the kick off the visitors were straight into the attack and Winscombe took the lead when they slotted home a penalty.
The visitors maintained their early pressure and ran in four tries one of which was converted and at the half hour mark Wellington found themselves 25-0 down.
At this stage of the game the crowd feared the worst but In the final 10 minutes of the first session Wellington started to get their game together. When Cam Venn went over for the hosts first try that was converted by Alex Davey, the large numbers of supporters came to life.
The Welly Boys doubled their points when Josh Mynett ran in to score which Davey also converted making the score 14-25 at the interval.
However after the break Winscombe came back strongly with two further tries one of which was converted to extend their lead again.
Despite being well in arrears Wellington kept looking to attack and got their reward when Venn scored his second of the day which Davey converted.
However it wasn’t quite enough and despite their best attempts Wellington surrendered their unbeaten home record as Winscombe ended the 37-21 winners.
Wellington travel to South Devon to face Teignmouth who have the same playing record and occupy seventh place after they were beaten 40-12 at high flying Tiverton last weekend.
