WELLINGTON Bowling Club welcomed five mixed triples teams from Mark Moor on Saturday.

Five games were played and there were some fascinating and unexpected results.

One of the most interesting was the match on rink 5. Janet Lovell, Roland Bath and skip Henry Richbell got off to an awful start.

At the halfway point they were ten shots down 15 - 5. All looked lost but the Wellington trio started to come back and after 16 ends, and with two to go they were level on 17 shots each.

Then, with just one end to go, Wellington picked up a shot to take the lead 18 – 17. Everything depended on the last end.

The plucky Wellington threesome put some good shots on the jack and were holding at least two when the Mark Moor skip played a beautiful bowl which slipped inside to take the shot. The end result was 18 shots to both teams after 18 ends!

Brian Wombwell, Monica Carter and skip Steve Lovell enjoyed a good game. Their opponents took a long time to pick up many shots so the Wellington team were nicely ahead by 18 shots to 7 after 14 ends.

Mark Moor salvaged some pride by taking eight shots in the last five ends but it was too little, too late for them, and Steve's team won comfortably 20 shots to 15.

Wendy Scott, Derek Vile and skip Darren Sparks played a good game on rink 3 but their opponents played well and took the match 16 shots to 11.

There was a real humdinger on rink 6. Tracey Richbell, Phil Wiggan and skip Tony Weston were in good form but so were their opponents. After 15 ends and with only three to play, the teams were level on 11 shots each.

The last ends were very close but Mark Moor pinched it on the line by a single shot 15 – 14.

On rink 4, Suzanne Worth, Brian Barnes and skip Arthur Carter did not have a good start and the Mark Moor trio took a healthy lead early on. The Wellington team started to come back near the end but ran out of time and Mark Moor won by 17 shots to Wellington's 10.

The overall scores were not very far apart but the victory went to Mark Moor by 81 shots to Wellington's 73.

Meanwhile, the Wellington club will be holding ‘another’ Open Day on Sunday, June 9, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., with the view to attracting more people to take up the sport.

It will not be necessary for any new bowlers to wear any special clothes but soft shoes and trainers will be fine.
