PROMOTED Wellington Reserves made a fine start to the new season by beating Clyst Valley 2-0 away in the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter Football League.

“It was a good, all-round display by the lads,” said the Reserves’ player-manager Mark Owen who left himself out of the squad. “We had some new players in the side and they fitted in really well.”

Brothers Jack and Sam Bryant are back with Wellington, while Scott Merritt, a former left-back with Cullompton Rangers, was also included in the starting line-up.

Goalkeeper Charlie Hawkings made one or two fine saves and was named Wellington’s Man of the Match.

Wellington made a flying start with Wes Poulsom capitalising on a goalkeeping mistake to put the visitors 1-0 ahead after only five minutes.

Jack Bryant added to Wellington’s lead by scoring with a brave header following a one-to-one with Valley’s goalkeeper in the 70th minute.

Wellington Reserves: Hawkings (C), Merritt, Davey, Bryant (S), Noble, Hawkings (A), Poole, Perry, Poulsom, Barratt, Bryant (J). Substitutes: Nott, Groves, Old, Beatty, Scotcher (all used).
