WELLINGTON Under 18s gained their first win of the season in South Division of the Western Counties Floodlit Youth Football League when they beat Shepton Mallet 6-2 away.

It was a convincing victory even though Wellington were missing four of their key players.

“I thought we might struggle but we played really well,” said Wellington’s manager Wayne Oaten afterwards. “I think we had 75 per cent of the play and could have scored a lot more goals.

“It was one of those nights when the ball simply would not go in. On another night we might have scored 20, we were that much on top.

“I thought we played well in both halves and didn’t allow Shepton to get into the match.

“We led 3-1 at half time and went on to net three more after the interval with Shepton adding a consolation goal. They never caused us any trouble.

“We’re hoping that we can keep up this kind of performance throughout the season - they’re some good sides in this division.

Scorers for Wellington were Lewis Oaten, Harry Jones, Oliver Southcott, Jimmy Groves, Leo Manners and Leo Calpin. Player of the match: Iggy Bergelis.

Wellington’s next league game is away to Street on Monday, October 14.
