WIVELISCOMBE pulled off their ninth victory of the season in Counties One Western West when they gained a comfortable 31-14 home win over Kingsbridge.
It means they remain fifth in the table with sixth-placed Redruth Seconds two points adrift after their success against Bude.
Playing down the slope in the first half Wiveliscombe’s set scrums provided problems for the visitors throughout the game with Kindsbridge conceding penalties at regular intervals. The visitors did compete well in open play with their lineouts supplying good possession .
Wivey had built a strong position by half time, scoring four bonus point tries through winger Thomas Lally, centre Tom Pearce, winger Will Ruell and flanker Sam Habberfied. Centre Will Thorne added four conversions. Kingsbridge’s first half points came from a try from prop Henry Rich converted by flyhalf Sam Jones. HT. 26pts 7pts.
The second half proved to be a much closer 40 minutes and the visitors had more of the play with the slope advantage although Wivey failed to finish several promising moves and scored one more try through centre Tom Pearce, with the conversions missed.
Vice captain Dan Jarvis scored the visitors’ secondhalf points with a try converted by Sam Jones. Wivey can now push on and build a solid finish to the season having five home fixtures in the remaining eight league games.
Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe 2nd XV gained a 32-3 away win over their Minehead counterparts. Wiveliscombe have now won ten of their 11 league games played this season. Top team Martock are on 64 points, 14 more than Wiveliscombe who have three games in hand.
The teams will meet in March in what could be the league decider. Wiveliscombe scored six tries in their league victory at Minehead with Paul Gridley, Josh White, Tom Caughey, Torin Keyte, Elliott Deeks and Stephen Briggs scoring five-pointers, while Cameron Palk added the one conversion.
