WELLINGTON Vixens turned on the style to beat Brixham Sirens 51-0 in a rugby friendly at Astley Park which was arranged after the withdrawal of Bath Spartans from the league.
Both clubs are celebrating their 150th anniversary years, so this was billed as 300 years of history meeting for the first time for women’s rugby.
From the KO the Vixens quickly got into their stride, and produced some outstanding defence in the first 10 minutes. Come scrum time great technique saw the Vixens causing havoc on the Brixham pack, pushing back and off their own ball, allowing the Vixens to turn over the ball and commence their own attacks.
It was from one such passage of play that saw Gemma Batts hit the line at speed and break through the Brixham defence. Fly half and captain Taylor Wetherall stepped up to add the extras.
From the restart the Vixens defence was crucial to them turning over so much ball and launching numerous attacks which saw Taylor Wetherall orchestrating play from fly half. Wetherall capitalised from one such move to find space and sprinting in for a fine third try, she then added the extra two points.
This saw some great handling in the back line with Lisa Jenkins racing over the white wash to add a third wide out, the extras were missed.
The next score came from a superb passage of play seeing charging runs from Jodie Curtis-Clift and Coral Osman before quick ruck ball released the backs and outside centre Maxime Pontin raced in for a fourth, the extras were missed. Half time: Brixham 0, Wellington 24.
The next score came after a sustained period of pressure by the forwards all linking up in some destructive driving play seeing second row Rebbeca Watts bulldoze over to score the fifth try, the extras were missed.
The flood gates then opened as Wellington piled on the pressure up front seeing some great driving play and with a strong leg drive, prop Natasha Beer to dive over next to the posts. Taylor Wetherall added the extras.
Scores then came from an expansive backs move to see wing three quarter Kate Jenkinson race over to score wide out, the extras were missed.
The next Vixens try came from a fine line break by Maxime Pontin to race over and score her second.
The last try came from fine play with forwards and backs combining and going through the phases before Centre Courtney Sellick backed herself with a darting run to score wide out.The extras were missed.
Player of the match was hooker Coral Osman who had a stand out game, forward of the match was Natasha Beer and back of the game was Courtney Sellick.
