WELLINGTON Rugby Club’s outstanding skipper Paddy Jarman is to stand down after three successful seasons as

captain.

Coach Allyn Chetland disclosed this week: “Paddy finished his degree this season and is actively looking for a job that will suit his skills. Consequently he cannot guarantee his commitment for the whole season if the right opportunity comes along. As a club we are obviously hoping that Paddy can find employment close to home so he can once again wear The Red & Black shirt this season.”

Jarman took over the captaincy in difficult circumstances with the 1st XV having just been regulated from Western Counties West, going down into the Cornwall & Devon league.

In his first season he led the team to promotion, bouncing straight back to Western Counties West, going up as champions of the Cornwall & Devon League. In the same season he also led the team to cup success, winning the Somerset Vase, easily beating a team from a higher league in a what was a one-sided encounter.

In his second season he led the team to third place in WCW, missing out on back to back promotions by the narrowest of margins after the team were harshly deducted points.

Paddy again took the reigns during the past season, winning promotion, as champions, to South West One West – the highest level the club has ever played in. Cup rugby was also on the agenda, with the 1st XV crowned South West champions in the RFU National Intermediate Cup and were only one game away from playing at Twickenham before the coronavirus restrictions came into place.
