WELLINGTON 2nd XV produced a superb display of attacking rugby and resolute defence to gain a 62-5 home victory against a very determined and resilient Cheddar Valley side in Counties Three Somerset South..
Welly scored 4 tries and 3 conversions in the first half. First on the score sheet was full back James Brackenbury, benefiting from a quick throw in from a Welly lineout. Callum Warren scored a trademark try, crashing over from 10 yards out. Scrum half Ben Fowler scored the third and then Rob Hooper scored in the corner at the end of the half, also converting three of the tries.
The players on the bench entered the fray shortly after the second half started, with coach Graeme Smith partnering his son Oli Smith in the centres. Welly Super 2s continued to play running attacking rugby. Live wire scrum half Ben Fowler added two more tries to score his first senior hat trick and Hooper added another to his tally, before Cheddar crossed the line for an unconverted try.
Tom Slade, playing on the wing, was a threat whenever he received the ball and set up another great try for full back James Brackenbury. Rob Hooper completed his hattrick after another scintillating run by Slade and it was Slade who managed to score the final try of the match after great hands by the backs, Hooper converted 3 of the tries in the second half.
The result saw Wellington go seventh in the table with eight wins and eight losses. The leaders of the division are Castle Cary who have lost only one of their matches but are under pressure from second-placed Bridgwater & Albion who are only one point adrift..
