WELLINGTON RFC Under 15s chalked up their fourth successive win when they made the trip to Yeovil on the back of three impressive displays and came away with a convincing 42-7 victory over their counterparts.
Wellington started slowly making a number of handling errors in the first ten minutes allowing Yeovil to dominate possession and territory. However Wellington defended well with some excellent tackling and eventually the tide began to turn and once it did Yeovil had no real answers to the power and skill of the Wellington boys.
Having absorbed a lot of pressure CJ opened the scoring for Wellington after some good hands saw the ball come to CJ who ran through to score. Ruan added the conversion.
CJ scored again after some great defensive line speed put pressure on the Yeovil backs with CJ intercepting a loose pass and dotting down. Ruan again added the extras.
Then it was James’s turn running powerfully from half way and breaking numerous attempts to tackle him before scoring in the corner. This time CJ added the extras from near the touchline. The score at half time was 21-0.
Wellington extended their lead to 28-0 when Ruan ran hard and straight from centre following a solid Wellington scrum and then converted his own try. Then it was Jack’s turn, sniping round the fringe of a ruck following a strong run from Harry. The extras added by CJ.
Finally Alex ran powerfully as he had all match and from just inside the Yeovil half ran though and scored. Again CJ added the conversion.
Yeovil scored with the last play of the match to make the final score: Yeovil 7 Wellington 42.
This was another outstanding performance with lots of players putting their hands up to be player of the match. Tom C was excellent quietly going about his job but with great power making strong runs and securing turnover ball on a regular basis. Theo had a great game at hooker, hitting his jumpers with accuracy.
Henry making his debut for the Wellington club was also excellent running powerfully and tackling hard. At the end though the players voted that Salvador and Lukas should be joint players of the match for their outstanding general contribution to the victory.
The U15s are becoming a very good team with excellent defence complemented by strong skilfull running with the ball in hand. When they start to recognise and take opportunities to move the ball wider and faster they will be even more of a force to be reckoned with.
It has been an outstanding first half of the season - and the boys are looking forward to more of the same in 2025.
