TITLE-chasing Wellington will be looking to avenge one of only two rugby defeats this season when they play at home to Honiton in the Cornwall and Devon League on Saturday (3.00).
Wellington, who go into the match with a ten-point lead at the top of the table, lost 16-15 at Honiton on the opening day of the season after conceding a controversial try during injury time.
Wellington claimed the ball was held up over the line but the referee awarded a try after a long delay despite being on the wrong side of a maul. “There was a mass of bodies and there’s no way the referee could have seen whether the ball was grounded,” said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland.
Two weeks later Wellington lost to Saltash, and since then have beaten the Cornish side during a 22-match winning run.
Wellington should have played Hayle in a league match at home over the weekend but the visitors could not field a full side but arrived with some guests and played a friendly at the Athletic Ground. The result was a 62-0 victory for Wellington before the game was abandoned because of a couple of injuries to Hayle’s players.
