BAR being sent on a mission to Mars, Wellington will be crowned champions of the Cornwall & Devon League in the next three days.
Wellington opened up a nine-point lead over title-rivals Saltash after beating Honiton 43-24 over the weekend - and now need only to beat bottom team Torrington at home on Saturday to be sure of finishing top (3.00).
However, second-placed Saltash have two matches left to play and will be in action at Tavistock tomorrow. If they do not gain five points from this game, Wellington will be champions. The Cornish side’s other match is also away - to fifth-placed Bude on Saturday which will not be easy.
Wellington have won their last 23 matches and have gained revenge for their only two defeats this season - against Saltash and Honiton.
Wellington coach Allyn Chetland said after the win over Honiton: “It was a very good victory against a really good and physical side. It was an excellent game of rugby.”
Wellington could be without back row forward Danny Lee for Saturday’s game against Torrington. He suffered a shoulder injury against Honiton and was forced off ten minutes from the end.
Wellington will also be looking to add more silverware to their cabinet next Tuesday when they play Winscombe in the final of the Somerset Vase at North Petherton.
