WELLINGTON will be looking to step up the pressure at the top of the table when they play new Western Counties West leaders Crediton at the Athletic Ground on Saturday (2.30).

While Wellington remain fourth in the table despite a 13-match unbeaten run, only six points separate the top four sides.

Crediton knocked Sidmouth off the top of the table over the weekend after beating them 18-10 at home while Wellington proved too good for Truro, winning 60-21 and running in ten tries. St Austell also lost - away to Chard 25-24.

The top four sides - Crediton, Sidmouth, St Austell and Wellington - have now pulled away from the chasing bunch.

Wellington have only five matches to play and will be aiming to win all of them, although they end the season with an away match against Chard who are impressive at home but very poor on their travels.

“We have to focus on one match at a time,” said Wellington coach Allyn Chetland. “The lads are playing some impressive rugby - they’re getting better every week.

“Results last weekend went for us, with St Austell also losing. Crediton are a strong side all-round with few weaknesses. They are very well organised and work hard.”

Of the top four sides, Wellington have the best points difference which could be decisive at the end of the season.

Danny Lee and Nev Pitman, who were both unavailable against Truro, both come back into the equation for Saturday’s big game.

Wellington 2nd XV, who lost again in Somerset One over the weekend which is concerning for the club, are home to Crewkerne, who are only one place above them, on Saturday..

If Wellington are promoted to South West One (W) next season, they will want a strong 2nd XV but at the moment it is fairly weak. However, promotion should attract new players to the club.
