WELLINGTON snapped up a late try and conversion to gain a last-gasp 32-29 home victory over bottom side Newton Abbot in Regional Two South West at the Athletic Ground.

Wellington appeared to paying the penalty for making far too many mistakes as they went into the last few minutes of the game 29-25 down.

But up popped Liam Phillips who wriggled his way over for a try at the Coram’s Road end with Danny Goverd kicking the conversion points.

It was a game which Wellington made hard work of winning against a side who had won only once this season - and this was against Wellington early on in the season.

It was 15-15 at half time with Cam Venn and Will Brewer scoring tries for Wellington with Goverd kicking a penalty and Brewer landing a conversion.

The Devon side went 22-15 ahead early in the second half before Venn scored his second try of the match, converted by Goverd, to bring the scores level again at 22-22.

Goverd kicked a penalty to put Wellington 25-22 up after an hour’s play but Newton Abbot hit back again to score a pushover try - their second of the match - which was converted, to make it 29-25 to the visitors - with time running out.
