IN a top of the table clash Welly Super 2s welcomed Castle Cary to the Athletic Ground.
Within minutes, Welly were five yards out from Cary line, however, the opportunity went begging.
Minutes later, Cary were awarded a penalty and punched the ball within 15 yards of the Welly line. A well worked catch and drive by the Cary pack resulted in a converted try. Awarded another penalty later in the half, Cary executed a carbon copy of the first try.
They scored again seven minutes into the second half and an excellent conversion took it to 21-0.
But Welly’s resilient young team fought back, camped on the Cary 5m line and were eventually awarded a penalty try after constant infringements by the Cary pack.
Welly continued to press and resolute defence, dislodged the ball from a Cary player.
Live wire scum half Lewis Leslie hacked the loose ball up field and prop come winger Matt Huggett, hacked the ball on further and eventually scored a try, converted by Rob Hooper.
With their tails up, Welly pressed for the equalizing try, however, time was against them and the match finished 14-21.
Next up an away game vs North Petherton.
