WELLINGTON face a crunch match against Crediton in Western Counties West at the Athletic Ground on Saturday (2.30), writes Barry Knott.
It is the first of three tough games in succession for Wellington who play away to leaders Sidmouth the following week before entertaining second-placed St Austell.
Wellington, who strolled to a 46-8 home win over Saltash over the weekend, lost by an agonising 13-12 at Crediton in early September after missing a late conversion which would have won them the game. It was Wellington’s first defeat in 12 months.
Wellington coach Allyn Chetland was ‘pleased’ with his side’s display against Saltash. “Our defence was particularly good - they only had one chance in the second half,” he said. “We created chances and our finishing was clinical.”
One disappointment for the match against Crediton is the loss of talented winger Ash Harney who damaged ankle tendons and ligaments against Saltash and could be out for a lengthy spell.
“Ash has been playing really well and he will be missed,” added Chetland. “Otherwise we’re near full-strength.”
Wiveliscombe, who have a nine-point lead at the top of Somerset Premier after beating Weston’s second string 27-17, have a top of the table clash away to second-placed Nailsea & Backwell.
Wivey have lost only twice this season in the league - both of them away.
Wellington 2nd XV are also home - to Crewkerne in Somerset One - while Wiveliscombe 2nd XV, bottom of Somerset Two South, are away to mid-table Somerton.
Wellington Rugby Club will be open for the Six Nations Rugby Championship starting with Ireland v England on Saturday.
