WELLINGTON Reserves have a three-point lead at the top of the first division in the Devon & Exeter Football League after their 6-1 away victory over Bow Amateur Athletic.
Player-manager Mark Owen was able to take a strong squad for this tricky trip on a tight pitch and with blustery conditions they needed to make a strong start and that’s what he got. After eight mins Aaron Hawkings was quickest to react in the box and fire home to make a perfect start.
Wellington had to wait until the 30th min to increase the lead. As the ball was played into the box Dylan Groves got his head to it and guided the ball into the opposite corner to give the lads a deserved 2-0 lead. Then as half time was approaching Luke Perry made a good run down the left and crossed a fine ball into the box and Wes poulsom hit it first time and the ball found its way into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 at half time. With Bow making a few changers for the start of the second half and going three up front Wellington could not have asked for a better start. Poulsom was sent clear and as he ran through on goal he was tripped in the box resulting in a penalty. Rohan got up to dispatch the penalty into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance 4-0. Bow responded well and with the wind playing its part the ball was now being hit long into the Wellington box and from one of these attacks Bow pulled a goal back when from a scrabble in the box the ball was struck past Charlie Hawkings in goal. With many substitutions now being made the game had a quite period but with the game entering the last 15 mins Wellington really started to control the game all over the pitch and Rohan Poulsom added two more goals to complete his hat trick and all round excellent performance and a 6-1 win. Although three points clear, St Martins and Exeter Uni have games in hand but this result should at least give the reserves a top three finish.
