28 BOWLERS entered the Open Singles Championship at Wellington Bowling Club in the New Year.

After many competitive games there were just two bowlers left to play one another.

Ian Hollingsworth and Phil Ellis came head to head to fight it out in the Championship Final. 

To begin with the match was very even. After six ends Ian led by two shots, 6 – 4 and by the 10th he had improved his position to go 11 – 6 up.

Then Phil got into his stride and by the 12the two were level on 11 shots each.

By the fifteenth end of a entertaining clash they were still level at 14 – 14.

Then Ian pinched a one shot lead and looked to have the winning of it, but back came Phil to take six shots in the last three ends which ensured a very close but well deserved victory by 22 shots to 18.

Both players thoroughly deserved the applause from the spectators who had enjoyed some excellent bowling all night. 

So Phil Ellis was presented with the Shield by Club President Ann Cowling and Phil is now Wellington Bowling Club's Open Indoor Singles Champion 2024.
