KHAKI Sox renewed rivalry with the visit of Plymouth Mariners to Wellington in the first match between the teams since last year’s championship match where the Wellington outfit retained the league title.
On a warm but overcast day at the Wellington Rugby Club saw Mariners – second in the league visit the Khaki Sox in third.
With thanks for the game day sponsor CMN Fencing and the Season sponsor Conway Cladding, another successful day of baseball was played.
Khaki Sox started the game with the strongest available line up including the returning Miguel Sanchez pitching his first game for Khaki Sox this season for the highly anticipated clash. In what turned out to be a low scoring affair where hits were at a premium and the high quality of pitching from both sided with Mac MacDonald matching the efforts on the pitching mound for the Mariners.
With scores being hard to come by as demonstrated by the superb triple play in the bottom of the second Innings executed by the Mariners to keep the Khaki Sox off the score board. In the bottom of the third Innings the Khaki Sox broke the game open after scoring two runs.
Following his powerful pitching display Miguel Sanchez then managed to hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth Innings to make the Khaki Sox lead three.
Both sides looked to the bench to inject some freshness into their sides with a number of rookie plays being rotated into the lineups to gain much needed game time and experience.
With two more runs scored in the bottom of the seventh Innings taking the Kharki Sox lead to five runs to nil and neither pitcher relenting in the quality of performance the final two innings did not trouble the scorer to leave the Khaki Sox victorious 5-0 - a result that keeps the Khakis Sox in the hunt following the previous defeat in the outing at Exeter.
Next match is again at home with the visit of Newton Brewers on Sunday, June 23, with training at the Wellington Club every Thursday from 6pm all welcome.
