WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, gained a 2-2 away draw with highflyers Dunwear United in the first division of the Taunton & District Saturday League.
The Reds travelled to Dunwear with a depleted squad hoping to repeat the same heroics that were on display when they beat their title rivals 4-3 at home earlier in the season.
Reds made a great start to the match and went a goal up after only 20 seconds through new signing Paulo Borges. It wasn't long until the Reds doubled their lead, smart play down the left hand side seeing a Jack Lewis cross tidily finished by Aaron Hill
Looking like they would go in two up at half time, the Reds defended well. However, they were undone by an ‘offside’ goal, the referee later admitting he didn't see the flick on in the build up.
Still deserved leaders at half time, the Reds came out and were unlucky not to extend their lead a few times in the second half. It was not to be, however, and in the closing minutes, after series of fine saves by keeper Luke Vernon, the referee incorrectly awarded a corner to Dunwear when a header attempt glanced off the outside of the post. With one of the last kicks of the game, Dunwear equalised.
However, the Reds were very unlucky not to win the game but can hold their heads high and the win over Dunwear earlier in the season means they still hold the cards in the title race.
Having beaten Wellington Road Dons 8-4 in a midweek fixture at the Richard Huish College, the Reds moved up to sixth in the table with plenty of games in hand on the teams above them.
Top scorers of the day were Nether Stowey who hammered Exmoor Rangers 11-0 at home.
