MOST of Wellington AFC’s hugely successful Under 16 side will be stepping up to play in the Western Counties Floodlight Youth Football League next season.

The Under 16s came mighty close this season to winning three major trophies. They won the title in the Under 16 section of the Taunton Youth League and also won the Somerset Under 16 County Shield. Their only setback was in the Taunton Youth League’s KO Cup where they lost 1-0 to Staplegrove in the final, despite dominating much of the game.

The Wellington side was managed jointly by Wayne Oaten and Dave Jones who will be taking charge of the club’s Under 18s in the floodlit youth league next season.

“I think a number of our lads in the Under 16s will be looking to play in the Under 18s next season,” said Wayne.

“It will certainly be a new experience for them and some of them will be able to play at this level for two years.

“There are some very good teams in this league, with some players having played senior football already.”

Meanwhile, Wellington Town were due to play away to Winscombe in South Division of the floodlit league on Thursday, May 9, but the game was postponed.
