WELLINGTON Ladies put up a spirited fight before losing 3-2 at home to Watchet Town Ladies in Division Three South of the Somerset Women’s Football League.
However, the final scoreline did not reflect how well Wellington played as they were only able to field ten players against Watchet’s 11 and the visitors also had five subs.
The first half saw Wellington play some good football, creating lots of chances on goal. Watchet got two rather fortunate goals, but Wellington pulled one back before half-time with some lovely play from Izzy Webb in defence through to captain Chloe Walker. She then played a pass through the Watchet defence for player-manager Ash Grabham-White to run on and shoot home.
Wellington continued to play some really good football after the break, passing and communicating well. It was muddy and slippery and Watchet slid another goal past keeper Grace Keen, who had made some outstanding saves, to make it 3-1.
Wellington pulled another goal back in the last 15 minutes from Chloe Walker who intercepted and ran through the middle. She saw the scoring chance with a shot which took a deflection.
Manager Ash gave out three player-of-the-match awards – to winger Leah Bradbeer, keeper Grace Keen and defender Katie Sweetland.
