WELLINGTON look to extend their lead at the top of the first division in the Toolstation League tonight (Mar 22) when they play away to Warminster Town.
Clive Jones’ boys opened up a three-point lead after beating Wincanton Town on Saturday.
But title rivals Hengrove were due to play at Chippenham last night and would close the gap to only two points if they won.
“I’m not worried about what other sides are doing,” said Jones who will miss tonight’s game because of work commitments in Italy. “I’m only worried about our own performance - we must stay focussed.” Ian Nott will be in charge tonight.
Scott Drayton (thigh strain) and John Rawlins (ankle injury) are both doubtful for the game.
Although not playing the best football of the season, Wellington were 3-0 home winners over Wincanton on Saturday, having beaten previous leaders Cheddar 4-0 earlier in the week.
Six points and no goals against in four days would have been sweet music to the ears of Jones.
“We were a little flattered by the margin of our win over Wincanton but, overall, I was pleased,” added Jones whose side have another away match on Saturday - against Devizes Town. He describes the two matches this week as “massive.”
The fight for the title has become a four-horse race which also includes Keynsham Town, Hengrove and Cheddar.
Hengrove appear to be the biggest threat to Wellington. They trail the leaders by five points before last night and had two matches in hand.
In all Wellington have only seven matches left in which to finish top or runners up and return to the premier division.
Wellington Reserves, who slump-ed 5-1 away to Exmouth Town Reserves, still have some work to do to avoid finishing in the drop zone in Division One of the Devon and Exeter League.
They play at home to fellow strugglers Alphington Reserves in a six-pointer while Hemyock, fifth in Division Six, are home to Stoke Hill. Wellington Thirds have no match.
Cheddar lost again on Saturday - to Ashton & Backwell (4-2) - while Keynsham, 4-2 at Bishops Lydeard, and Hengrove, 6-0 at home to Calne, both won.
