WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, are through to the next round of the Somerset Intermediate Cup following a penalty shootout at home against fellow Taunton Saturday League first division rivals Alcombe Rovers.
The Reds were facing the West Somerset outfit for a second time in a knockout cup tie this season. Always a well fought contest, the Reds went down to 10 men briefly in the first half due to a sin bin for Callum Hendy.
Both sides created chances with the goalkeepers being the stand-out players for both teams in the first half.
Two minutes before half Dave Darch received a harsh red card for what the referee deemed a dangerous tackle.
Alcombe could not break through Wellington's organised defence, even when the Reds went down to nine after Connor Sellick was also sinbinned.
The Reds midfield three and front two worked tirelessly to press Alcombe, forcing defensive errors by Alcombe which were not punished by the home side.
In the penalty shootout which followed the goalless tie, Sellick, Paul Pocock, Tyler Fyfe and Hendy all converted. Reds' goalkeeper Luke Vernon crucially saved Alcombe's 4th penalty and Jack Lewis slotted home the Reds' fifth to put them in the hat for the next round.
