WELLINGTON went into last night’s match at Welton top of the first division in the Toolstation League.

“Yes we’re top but the challenge is staying there,” said Wellington boss Clive Jones.

Wellington came from goal down to beat Calne Town 4-1 away on Saturday to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

“I am trying to push the players and they are responding,” said Jones. “We have been giving the ball away far too easily but they didn’t do this at Calne.

“I think we are benefitting from having competition for places and quality players on the bench.

“I know that I can bring on players from the bench who will not weaken the side.

“I have a good squad of 17 players and the problem is keeping them all happy.”

However Wellington went into last night’s game without club skipper Sam Bryant and Olly Nott, who are both injured.

Bryant, one of four brothers with Wellington, has damaged knee ligaments and could be out for another two or three weeks while Nott (ankle injury) will be out for longer.

Meanwhile Wellington continue their run of away matches - they face eight in total – with a match on Saturday against Hengrove Athletic who have been tipped for the title by Jones.

“They have a good side and good management,” added Jones. “We have no midweek match next week which will allow us to look back on our performances so far.

“Saturday’s game will be a big test for us but it will show how far we have progressed. So far I’m pleased with the way we have improved since our first match.”

Wellington fell behind to a goal from the penalty spot before fighting back to beat Calne 4-1 with goals by Ian Bellinger, Luke Redrup, Jack Taylor and Jack Bryant.
