WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, are through to the semi-finals of the Taunton Saturday Football League’s Rowbarton Charity Cup.

Returning to action for the first time since before Christmas, Reds beat Bridgwater Grasshoppers 3-1 in the quarter-finals at The Castle School in Wellington Road.

The game was very even until the Grasshoppers’ right winger broke free, crossing low into a good area and the ball was turned into the net by an unfortunate Reds’ defender.

However, their lead did not last long. After the Reds won a throw deep into the Grasshoppers’ half, the ball was headed into the net by Luke Desave to make the half time score 1-1.

The second half started with the Reds turning up a notch and scored a second, with Tyler Fyfe rifling home at the back post. Grasshoppers had the better of the last 20 minutes but the Reds soaked up the pressure. Late in the game Zac Ryder made it 3-1 from a corner for Reds to clinch a place in the last four.

The Reds, who have played only six times in the league, return to action in Division One when they play third-placed Alcombe Rovers at the Playing Field on Saturday, January 11 (2p.m.).
