WELLINGTON Reds, the footballing section of the local cricket club, completed a hat-trick of victories over Alcombe Rovers this season when they beat their rivals 3-2 at home in Division One of the Taunton and District Saturday League.
Always a competitive fixture Alcombe were looking for revenge after already being knocked out of two cup competitions by the Reds this season.
The Reds started slowly and Alcombe scored twice in the first 20 minutes. The Reds soaked up further pressure and eventually found their feet and pulled a goal back just before half time. A ball over the top found its way to Jake Quick who was incorrectly flagged offside; the referee allowed play to continue and Jake being closed down by the keeper cleverly finished by lobbing him from the edge of the box.
Starting the second half much better than the first, the Reds won a corner which was put away at the back post by Liam Oaten.
Now at 2-2, it was the Reds' game to lose. The second half saw yellow cards shown for both teams as the contest heated up.
The Reds then put themselves ahead for the first time of the game through leading goalscorer Jack Lewis. The Reds dug in and despite going down to 10 men towards the end, they held tight and made it victory 3 out of 3 against Alcombe this season.
Meanwhile, Wellington A went down to a 3-0 home defeat against reigning champions Redgate in the Premier Division on the all-weather pitch at Court Fields.
Wellington had more of the play and created chances - but conceded the second and third goals while going forward.
“I don’t think they are the side they were last season - I think they have lost a few of their players,” said Wellington’s joint manager Warren Toft.
