WELLINGTON Wildcats made it five consecutive wins with a comfortable 6-0 away victory over Weston Ladies Reserves in Division One of the Somerset Women’s Football League.
Having scored after 23 seconds the previous week Wildcats were looking for another fast start and only a good save from the home ‘keeper stopped them grabbing an even quicker goal.
Not to be deterred, Wildcats took the lead after six minutes with Robyn Stockman finishing after a neat one-two with Ebony Sellick. This should have been the catalyst for Wildcats to push on, but instead they relaxed a little and ‘keeper Bianca Hamlyn made a fine save while Tenika Goss and Grace Winter made telling tackles to thwart any threat.
Leah Morrell extended Wildcats lead after forty minutes when she stuck out a foot to deflect a Georgia Purdy drive past the wrong-footed keeper. In between both Stockman and Sellick had good chances to add to the tally while the Weston keeper made several very good saves.
Within six minutes of the re-start Wildcats were three up, Ebony Sellick firing into the bottom corner after being put through by Stockman, who was excelling on the right of midfield. Charlotte Ayers and Georgia Purdy, who are quickly developing the perfect partnership in Wildcats midfield, combined to set up Sellick’s second and Wildcats fourth in the fifty-ninth minute before Sellick completed her hat-trick just two minutes later with the pick of her goals; an excellent left-footed strike from just outside the six-yard box after an individual run from 25 yards.
Keeley Coates hit the underside of the bar and then saw a shot pushed onto the post by the home keeper as Wildcats pressed for further goals. With nothing to lose Weston did try to play some football of their own. They tried down the left wing, but found Bryony Sellick in excellent form, while any long balls over the top were easily mopped up by Emily Ayers and Goss in the heart of Wildcats defence.
Morrell completed the scoring on eighty-one minutes, smashing home at the second attempt after latching onto to an excellent ball into the box from Chloe Payne.
In added time, Weston had one final chance to get a goal; a fine corner into the box, their first of the match, was met by an equally fine header which was pushed onto the post by Hamlyn, before being cleared off the line by a combination of Hamlyn and Emily Ayers.
