GOALKEEPER Bianca Hamlyn capped an excellent season by scooping up the Supporters’ Player of the season and Players’ player of the season awards when Wellington Wildcats Ladies held their annual dinner and dance at The Orchard, Rumwell Farm last weekend.

She also picked up the Peter Ayers trophy (nominated by Peters dad Barry) which is awarded to the most Industrious player.  Striker Ebony Sellick grabbed two awards at the event which was attended by more than 50 guests.

She picked up the golden boot for her 10 goals and now has 21 senior goals from 36 games while she also walked away with the Managers’ Player of the season award.  Goal of the season went to Emily Ayers for her 25-yard strike to seal the home win against Bishops Lydeard Reserves while Naomi Southcott was the most improved player who finished the season at the top of her game.

Wildcats’ person of the year was Yvette Waygood who works tirelessly behind the scenes for both the senior and junior wildcats teams.

In his speech John Sellick thanked their sponsors Anchor Services, Wellington Tile Company and Arnolds Plumbing and Heating and also presented flowers to Julie Sellick, Yvette Waygood, Natalie Hamlyn and Jenny Oxby.  He also thanked goalkeeping coach Ian Nott for his excellent work with Bianca.

Before a disco by the brilliant TH Discos and Events the ladies held their own locker room awards which included the Moon Shooter Award and Twinkle Toes Award.

Under the management of John Sellick Wildcats completed their first season in Division One of the Somerset County Women’s League with a credible eight wins from 18 games; they coupled this with a run to the semi-final of the Chairmans Cup where they lost 3-2 to the eventual winners.

Yeovil Town were the outstanding winners of Division One. They won all 18 of their games and finished with the maximum possible points of 54. Wells City were runners up, some 17 points behind the champions while Wells City were third, one point further adrift. At the other end of the table, Sydenham Rangers failed to win a game and ended the season with just one point. It means, of course, they face relegation.

Wellington, who were promoted to the top division following the 2022-23 season when they won Division Two South, will be looking to improve next season and welcome any new players to attend their weekly training sessions, which are currently held on Thursday evenings at Wellington Recreation ground (these start at 6.30pm.).

Anyone wishing to become involved in sponsorship of the Wildcats Ladies are welcome to contact John Sellick via the Wellington AFC website.
