WELLINGTON Reds, the football section of the local cricket club, continued their splendid start to the season by beating Alcombe Rovers 2-1 in the second round of the Taunton & District Saturday Football League's Seward Cup at The Castle School in Taunton.
For the second time in a week, the Reds were facing an old rival in Rovers who finished third in Division Three last season and joined Reds in being promoted.
After some resolute defending, Reds took the lead part way though the first half when Jack Lewis swung a low free kick outside the wall and into the bottom corner, leaving the keeper stranded.
In the second half Alcombe piled on the pressure and looked the better team, forcing Reds’ keeper Luke Vernon into pulling off some excellent saves. Eventually Alcombe were able to pull back an equaliser and then should have taken the lead but the striker's header was well off target.
In the dying moments of the tie a long throw deep into the Alcombe box saw debutant Jamie Fleet capitalise, giving the Reds a 2-1 victory on the night.
The win saw the Reds through to the quarter finals where they will play Dulverton Town who play in Division Two.
